$1 out of every $6 in 2020 rental assistance spent elsewhere

Some 70 state and local agencies set aside $2.7 billion from the Coronavirus Relief Fund in 2020 for rental assistance programs. More than $425 million of that was either reallocated for other COVID-related expenditures or remained unspent by March 31, 2021.

* Three New Jersey agencies administered Coronavirus Relief Fund dollars. The New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency reallocated about half of the $10 million it set aside for rental assistance. The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and the New Jersey Department of Human Services spent 100 percent of the combined $103 million they allocated for rental assistance.
