Majority of legal abortions are obtained by Black or Hispanic women in states restricting abortion rights

In 2019, Black women had 74% of legal abortions reported in Mississippi, while 39% in Texas were had by Hispanic women. At least 67% of legal abortions were obtained by women-of-color in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

1. Person-of-color includes Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, and American Indian or Alaska Native.
2. Data may not sum to total due to rounding.
3. 23 reporting areas did not report data, while data from 28 reporting areas was not reported by race/ethnicity, or did not meet reporting standards. As data are reported voluntarily by providers to state or area health departments, information may be incomplete and result in undercounting abortions when calculating rates and ratios in some states.
4. Data from Louisiana is sourced directly from the Louisiana Department of Health.
